Upgrading your Mac and wondering what to do with the old one? A used MacBook is one of the most valuable second-hand devices you can sell — if you sell it the right way. Here are the main options Sydney sellers have in 2026, and how to get your MacBook ready so the valuation goes smoothly.
Your three main options
1. Online marketplaces
Listing on a marketplace can work if you have time and patience. The trade-offs: you deal with no-shows and lowball offers, you carry the risk of payment scams, and meeting strangers to hand over an expensive laptop is not everyone’s idea of a good weekend. Listings for popular models also compete with hundreds of others, so selling can take weeks.
2. Manufacturer trade-in programs
Trade-in programs are convenient, but the value usually comes back as store credit rather than cash, and quotes for anything other than recent, near-perfect machines tend to be conservative. Damaged or older MacBooks are often declined outright.
3. A licensed local buyer
A licensed second-hand dealer buys the MacBook from you directly: you get a quote first, an in-person inspection, and payment on the spot once you accept the offer. There is no waiting for a buyer, no shipping, and a licensed dealer is required to verify ID and keep records — which protects honest sellers. Tradelectronics holds NSW second-hand dealer licence 2PS22225 and buys MacBooks at our store in Ashfield, Sydney — see how selling a MacBook to us works.
What affects your MacBook’s value
- Model, chip and year — an M-series MacBook Air or Pro generally holds value far better than older Intel models.
- Specs — RAM, storage size and screen size all matter; know your configuration before asking for a quote.
- Battery health — check the cycle count under System Settings → Battery (or About This Mac → System Report → Power).
- Condition — screen marks, dents, keyboard wear and speaker condition all factor into the final offer.
- Accessories — the original charger and box help where available.
How to prepare your MacBook for sale
- Back up your data with Time Machine or a cloud backup.
- Sign out of iCloud (System Settings → Apple ID) and turn off Find My Mac — a Mac with activation lock still on cannot be purchased.
- Sign out of iMessage and any licensed software you plan to use elsewhere.
- Erase the Mac — on recent macOS, System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings.
- Gather the charger, box and receipts if you still have them, plus government-issued photo ID for the dealer’s records.

Send the model, year, specs, battery cycle count and a few clear photos to us on WhatsApp (+61 426 746 583). We reply with an initial estimate during opening hours. If the estimate works for you, visit our store at Suite 101 / 206 Liverpool Road, Ashfield NSW 2131 (Monday–Friday, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm) for an inspection — and if you accept the final offer, you are paid the same day.
